“Joining a round leg tangentially with the side rails is a tricky detail to get right in wood furniture,” says Pekka Koivikko, the designer of Kumu.

Koivikko started looking at various technical solutions that would enable even more simplified expression — the smooth transition of wood from a round shape towards straight lines. As part of the creation process of the Kumu chair, Koivikko developed a new type of wood joint, a technical solution that opened up opportunities for new aesthetics.
