NIKARI’S HOME
On our home in Fiskars village, an epicenter of Finnish design
A Unique Natural Ecosystem
The landscape changes drastically after the turn from the main road towards Fiskars. A tunnel through a rock almost doubles as a gate, leading to a peaceful, fairytale-like scenery. On the right side of the road glimmers the Borgbyträsket lake and by the road age-old trees stand tall, welcoming every visitor – as they have done for decades. This one-of-a-kind forest cover, proximity to nature and lush combination of 16 tree types create a fascinating and unique biodiversity that can’t be found anywhere else in Finland.
A Culture of Collaboration
Situated less than a hundred kilometres west from Helsinki, Fiskars has been an epicenter of Finnish handicrafts, art and design for hundreds of years. Located on the former municipality of Pohja, Fiskars iron works was founded in 1649 and is now home to a diverse group of artists, craftsmen and designers, all of whom are inspired by the area’s unique nature and culture of creative collaboration. Fiskars’s population is about 600 people. During the summer time, however, the place bustles with thousands of visitors every week, who come to enjoy the accommodations, restaurants and cultural happenings, which are increasingly also available during the winter months.
Nikari moved to Fiskars in 1993, to an old machine works built in 1837, which was an ideal location for the company to continue its evolution and growth. The Fiskars river rapids, located directly next to the studio, was re-equipped to produce electricity for the workshop in 2014; and the nearby saw mill has been a close collaborator from the very beginning. The area provides an incomparable working environment for cabinetmakers, with a connection to nature that is immediate and where the life-cycle of the wood material remains ever present.
