Ten years ago: 12 Designs for Nature
How can a decade feel like such a fleeting moment in time? Ten years ago, Nikari asked 12 designers and design studios to share their vision of Nikari’s design philosophy in the form of a product. The result — 12 Designs for Nature, a collection that launched on December 12th, 2012, a date that also marks the beginning of Nikari’s new, more international era.
Named after their respective month of the year, each piece from the 12 Designs for Nature collection engages in a dialogue with its wooden material and finds its form within the broader heritage of northern craftmanship. The collection’s international designers include, for example, Alfredo Häberli, Aamu Song & Johan Olin, Nao Tamura and Thomas Sandell. Over the years, the December chair, designed by Jasper Morrison and Wataru Kumano, has become one of the outstanding pieces in the collection, a piece of design that is still relatively young, but has already left a strong mark on Nikari’s history.

During the last ten years, the appreciation for solid furniture has increased significantly. While this development may seem unsurprising today, we shouldn’t forget just how different furniture preferences were only ten years ago. The time has come, however, to celebrate the gift that forests give us, as well as to celebrate those talented hands that draw out and perfect that gift. Of course, this gift requires that we continue to give back and make sure that we do our part to keep the balance. Towards that end, Nikari continues to cooperate with WWF Finland, with part of every 12 Designs for Nature purchase donated to protecting forests globally.
