The Detalji Bench: Combining the Strengths of Nikari and Woodnotes

Nikari’s novelty Detalji bench embodies the ongoing working relationship between Nikari and Woodnotes, who have been especially close companions since 2020. While the two companies brought their own particular material strengths to the bench, the end result is nothing short of a beautifully harmonious and symbiotic whole.

Wood In All Its Forms

The oak-framed bench is built with carpentry joints and is upholstered with Woodnotes’ Woodpecker fabric, designed by Ritva Puotila in the 1990s. The fabric’s natural colored paper yarn features a beautifully detailed pattern on its surface, which is further accentuated at both ends of the bench, which are also tightly braided with paper yarn.

The designer of Detalji, Nikari’s creative director Jenni Roininen, describes the product development process as exploratory and conversational: the process began by carefully studying the features of the two materials and then weaving them together to create a product that was more than the sum of its material parts. Oak and paper yarn are intertwined in perfect balance and harmony. Roinen continues: “With the bench, we want to present the diversity of Finnish design. The piece combines many things, great craftsmanship and finished detailing.”

The bench can be paired with a dining table, placed in the hallway or at the end of a bed. It has a strong yet flexible surface and its materials, which have been grown and processed in Finland, will continue their quiet conversation for years to come. The light and durable bench is suitable for both public spaces and homes.

“It’s great to showcase Woodnotes’ paper yarn as part of a wooden piece of furniture,” says Johanna Vuorio, the CEO of both Woodnotes and Nikari. “The resulting composition is both natural and sophisticated.” Detalji is crafted using traditional methods, with no plastic. It represents a genuine interplay of craftsmanship, Finnish materials, cooperation and friendship.
