Welcome to the Nikari living room in Fiskars!

Fiskars Village Biennale brings international artists and leading Finnish designers together. For us, the exhibition also offers a peek into the world of Nikari.

This summer, Fiskars hosts its third Fiskars Village Biennale, an international series of exhibitions that combine art and design, in which Nikari is honoured to participate. One of the joint cross-art exhibitions is curated by Sini Rinne-Kanto, at the request of Anni and Kari Korkman, and features Nikari alongside other leading Finnish brands, such as Woodnotes, Artek, Johanna Gullichsen, Secto Design and Lapuan Kankurit. Rinne-Kanto has selected an artist for each brand, who, together, have created rooms in an imaginary summer villa with the theme “Surprise Guest”. The idea is inspired by the casual hospitality that is typical of the Finnish summer lifestyle.

Nikari is involved in constructing the living room space, which has been produced together with Woodnotes and Secto Design.

“It is a joy to be in such great company. All the brands selected for the exhibition work tirelessly on behalf of design, craftsmanship and quality manufacturing, and art is linked to the activities of all these companies in one way or another,” says Johanna Vuorio, CEO and owner of Nikari.

Nikari has combined art and art handicraft with woodworking since the beginning of its journey.

Rarities

“Nikari has worked in close collaboration with artists and architects ever since the company was founded,” says Johanna. This is exactly what Fiskars Village Biennale is all about. Throughout its almost 60-year history, Nikari has created unique, all-wood items that explore the intersection of art and design, says Johanna, and gives an example of Nikari’s collaboration with artists: the wooden Intermundium Machine XVIII, a perpetual motion machine created with Daniel Libeskind in 1988.

Art has been a place to test new ideas and techniques. Some of these unique experiments have been turned into products – always making sure that the ideas work as genuinely practical items that make life easier and more beautiful and last for generations, like all of the Nikari products.

“Our goal at Nikari is to always create something timeless,” says Johanna.

Showroom open on Fridays

We add new products to our selection very gradually – sometimes more frequently, sometimes less often. The Nikari products and approach could be called exceptional in the world today; the term “rarity” seems particularly apt. Our customers often point out that every Nikari product is unique, because the material itself – wood – is unique. Nikari products are made in small-scale serial production, but you cannot find an identical pair to a single product. The grain patterns, knots and special characteristics of the wood are different in every product, the number of tree rings varies.

“Nikari products are unique in terms of their individual characteristics – every one of them stands in the intersection between art and design in its own way,” says Johanna.

This spring, new members were introduced to the calm, sleek furniture family of Nikari. We launched new products at the design fairs in Stockholm, Milan and Copenhagen, and these products are designed by interesting designers from Finland and abroad. The new products are on display in our studio-showroom, which has been in Fiskars for years – in the same building where the first models of our products are always created.

“Our studio-workshop and showroom in Fiskars is the heart of Nikari,” says Johanna.

The showroom is open on Fridays this summer. You can combine your visit there to a summer trip to Fiskars and also admire the Fiskars Village Biennale.

“We have created the living room at the biennale, and all surprise guests are warmly welcome to visit the space.”
